I see too many people show up to a session completely stressed out and worried about theings going perfectly during their session. I understand that this is a big investment and that you want everything to go perfectly, but I want to tell you that you and your family do not need to perform for me. Your family does not need to be or act perfect to achieve the most beautiful photos. What really matters is that you are willing to let go of perfection and just give in and be who you are. Your family is beautiful just the way you are.

To me, the experience you have is just as important as the photos. I know first hand that being a parent is exhausting! I want you to think about your time with me as a chance to sit back and relax and not worry about how your children are behaving. I would much rather you let things go (as long as it is safe) and let them do what they want. I will rarely tell your child to sit still and they will do the cutest things on their own. Chaos will happen, but the chaos is beautiful. The more you are able to relax and not worry about every little thing your child is doing, the more freedom they have to be themselves. I can almost guarantee that we will get amazing photos even if it feels a little crazy in the moment.

What time of year is best for photos?
It is never too early to reach out and schedule your family session. Fall is definitely the busiest time of year for me not only with photography, but for my children's sports. So if you are hoping for Fall photos, please reach out as soon as possible. Dates can fill up more than a month in advance.
Think about clothing that makes you feel your best and like yourselves. I love clothing that adds movement (think about flowy dresses for the girls). I love earthy, muted colors that will not distract from the natural beauty. I recommend that your family coordinates with a few colors (including several neutrals) and patterns that compliment each other without being too matchy matchy. Absolutely! If you consider your dog a part of the family, I am more than happy to include them in your session. Most of the places that I love to photograph allow dogs on leash. For more information on incorporating dogs in your family photos, check out this blog post.
All of my sessions last about 1 - 1.5 hours. I do not have a set end time, but will usually go as long as we have light and as long as you and your kids are enjoying the process. I understand that meltdowns can happen with young children and we might need breaks, so this gives us enough time to not feel rushed while still getting all of the emotional photos you were hoping for.
I have several beautiful outdoor locations that I love to shoot at in and around Colorado Springs and I will send you a location guide of some of my favorite spots. Outdoor family photos should not be limited to the Fall, especially in Colorado Springs! There is beauty year round here. Wildflowers in the Springs and Summer, snow in the Winter. Sure, Fall is absolutely stunning, but we will have more flexibility for dates and reschedules at other times of the year. In addition, most outdoor locations are less crowded if you avoid the Fall. I will work with you to pick the best time of year depending on what you are going for.
