Baby Photos in Colorado Springs

Maybe you wanted to do newborn photos, but things got too crazy and you ran out of time or forgot about it. Maybe you aren’t the biggest fan of newborn photos, but you love the idea of getting photos with a slightly older baby! I do love newborn photos, but if you ask me, there is nothing better than photographing a wide-eyed baby after they have learned to smile and have started to develop a little bit of their personality!! Here are a few things to think about when looking for a baby photographer in Colorado Springs.

What is the best time to schedule baby photos?

For me, there is no specific timeframe you need to have your baby photos taken. Many newborn photographers who do a more posed in beautiful baskets type photography require you to schedule your newborn session within the first couple of weeks. This is so they can get the baby asleep and in those perfect positions. That is not the type of photographer I am. With a more lifestyle approach, it does not matter if the baby is asleep or awake. I am capturing more of what real life might look like with you and your baby. Because of this, it does not matter how old the baby is. The baby featured in this blog post is 6 months old. It was such a fun and adorable session! He still loved to snuggle with his parents, but was able to sit and showed off his huge personality. I loved it so much and could photograph this age all day!!

Where should we take our baby photos?

While newborn photos are most often taken indoors, it does not matter as much when the baby is older. They are better able to tolerate slight weather variations. I offer outdoor sessions or in home sessions. It really just depends on your preference. Some people love the comfort and ease of having a session in their own home, where you are the baby will be most comfortable. Others love to have their photos taken outdoors. In Colorado Springs specifically, we have the most beautiful backdrops for family and baby photos. The other benefit of outdoor photos is you don’t have to clean and prepare your home 🙂 If you are thinking about outdoor photos with me, one of the main things to consider is the time of year. I start my outdoor sessions about 1.5 hours before sunset for ideal lighting. In the middle of summer, that gets to be pretty late for the young ones. If you are able to time it in the Spring or Fall, the sun will set much earlier, meaning we will start earlier. Winter works as well, but it is important to think about how cold it might be and if the baby can tolerate the weather. In Colorado Springs, our winters can actually be quite mild. I offer quite a bit of flexibility for reschedules due to weather, especially in the Winter months when it is not my busiest season.

What if my baby does not cooperate?

Make sure you know your photographer’s policy and how they deal with kids that do not cooperate. I never expect babies to fully cooperate with a photo session. In fact, I expect for the baby to be on their own agenda!! Even if your baby is being fussy or acting a little crazier than usual, you would be surprised at the magic we are able to create. I just need those micro moments in between to capture something truly beautiful…and sometimes those messy moments being documented are the most beautiful. If the session truly does end up being a disaster (which is such a rare thing), I am more than happy to give it another try. Customer satisfaction is my highest priority. I will always be able to tell you if I got what I need or if we need to try another day. The last thing I want is for parents to stress about the session going perfectly.

Does the photographer offer video?

One thing to look into is whether or not your photographer offers video with their sessions. Most people don’t even know this is an option, but I have started offering video as an add on option to your photography session. You don’t even know how much you want and need this until you see it! I make parents cry over and over again when they watch their videos. It becomes their most prized possession. Learn more about adding video to your session.

What is the photographer’s rescheduling policy?

It is important to know what the rescheduling policy is for any photographer you hire, but especially when you are hiring a baby photographer. We all know that babyies are subject to sicknesses more easily and they cannot tolerate extreme weather as well as older children can. Be sure to ask your photographer what their policy is for reschedules and make sure it will work with your family.

Does the photographer offer prints?

The thing most families don’t know they need, but they do need, is print options. Everyone thinks they just want those digital files and that they will print them on their own some day. The truth is, if you have a baby, you are going to forget printing those photos even with the best of intentions. Trust me, I have been there. High quality prints are the best way to preserve your photos and to make sure they don’t just end up lost on a hard drive somewhere. Make sure you print the high quality photos that will last a lifetime. They can be put on display in a frame, or my favorite way to preserve photos is through an album. These beautiful albums can be stored on bookshelves and brought out to look through often. Your children will love looking back on these photos as they get older! A high quality album can be passed down to the next generation and cherished forever.
